The Cross Sell is an integral aspect of the user journey, transforming a consumer with already high purchase intent into someone ready to add an item to cart purely off of your recommendation alone. Like any great recommendation, timing is as important as the gesture so read on to learn how to use Yieldify to surface the best possible cross sell at the right time.

Targeting / Triggering Recommendations

Cross sell notifications are most effective as responsive messaging. We only want to surface an cross sell directly after a user has added the product they are currently browsing to cart. Share this message too early and a user may click off a product they were about to add. Share too late and the recommendation may no longer seem relevant to the user.

We recommend that you have this campaign trigger on click. This means that this message will only appear after a user has clicked the add to cart button.

Setting this up is easy.

In your campaign's targeting rules, select the On Click trigger.

The On Click trigger requires you to select an element selector that will cause the campaign to trigger once clicked.

This can be anything on your website ranging from an image to a section of text. In this case, we will want this to be the Add to Cart button on your product page.

To find the element selector. Take the following steps

  1. Right click on the element you want to click and choose "Inspect"

  2. This will open Inspect mode on your webpage and elements will be seen on the right of your screen

  3. Hover your cursor over the html on the right that highlighted after choosing select. You will see this flag your element, confirming that it is the correct html to select

  4. Right click and select Copy > Copy Selector

See a visual example of copying a selector below

Once this selector is copied, paste it into the Element form field on the On Click trigger as seen below

Recommended Strategy

  • Recommend a single product: The consumer is already very close to completing a purchase and offering too many options at this stage could cause the consumer to focus more on browsing than completing their purchase

  • Direct the consumer to a new product page: The consumer already displayed high purchase in their current product by adding it at the product page, rather than clicking a "Quick Shop" add to cart button on a category page. A consumer will want to fully understand any other item they are adding to cart, so we recommend making it easy for the consumer to find that information.

  • Display only one cross sell per session: Cross sell messaging is effective in increasing AOV, though can increase the risk that a user will not convert in that session. Therefore, we recommend only sharing one cross sell message per session to ensure that a consumers if given the opoprutnity to increase their cart size without losing a potential sale. Trust that your cross sells are driving positive net revenue impact through incremental testing.
